Greg Barnes

Assistant Attorney General

Bio

  • The son of a career Air Force officer who won the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Missouri Special Education Teacher of the Year, Greg was raised with an ethic of patriotism and service. During his college years, Greg was an intercollegiate debater, did a field term with the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, helped jump-start an anti-apartheid movement, and was twice elected Student Body President. After college, Greg worked for several public interest groups before attending law school.

During law school, Greg won awards for ranking his classes in Constitutional Law, Mediation, and International Law. After law school, Greg clerked for a judge on the Missouri Court of Appeals and worked for Sandberg, Phoenix, and Von Gontard in St. Louis before joining the AGO in 1996. In his nearly 27 years at the AGO, Greg has been a litigator, a tobacco Master Settlement Agreement enforcer, and a criminal appeals specialist, handling more than 750 cases in the Missouri appellate courts. He has also handled the occasional “Indian” law case.

Greg is a rabid bridge player, holding the rank of Gold Life Master in the American Contract Bridge league, and acts in community theater productions. He has served on three non-profit boards related to these interests. He has been married to his wife, Renee, for 20 years.
