The Attorney General is charged with enforcing the Missouri Sunshine Law to promote open and transparent government. The Attorney General’s Office reviews complaints regarding potential Sunshine Law violations. However, please understand that the Attorney General cannot act as your attorney, but represents the state’s interests in ensuring that public meetings and records are open to the extent provided by law.
Â
Upon receipt of your complaint, staff members will conduct a thorough review, which may take up to several months depending on the complexity your complaint. Staff may contact you if additional information is needed. The review of your complaint may include the Attorney General’s Office contacting the public governmental body for additional information and its response to your complaint. To ensure the most thorough and prompt review, please complete the complaint form as thoroughly as possible.
Â
The Attorney General’s Office may resolve a complaint in several ways. In certain cases, the Office may take legal action against the public governmental body in court. Complaints also may be resolved by a warning letter alerting the body of possible violations, issuing guidance to the body and encouraging it to adopt best practices, requiring attendance at a Sunshine Law training, a finding of likely no violation, or no further action by the Attorney General’s Office.
