JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Today, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced that his Office has filed a lawsuit against Vinelanders Community Land Trust, Inc of Kansas City and its owner Alice Goodlow.
The lawsuit alleges that Goodlow solicited charitable donations and membership fees from thousands of Missourians on the pretense that those funds would be pooled to provide homes to trust members.
Further, Goodlow conditioned members’ ongoing eligibility to receive homes on additional payments for appliances and furnishings for the to-be-completed homes. Investigations by the Missouri Attorney General revealed that Goodlow, after operating the trust for eight years, not only failed to ever provide a promised home but also never used any of the solicited funds toward that purpose.
The suit, seeking restitution and a court-ordered injunction has been filed in Jackson County. The petition filed can be found here: https://ago.mo.gov/docs/default-source/press-releases/2019/state-of-mo-ex-rel-v-vinelanders-community-et-al-2016-cv00120(11412872-2).pdf?sfvrsn=3f2623a4_2
