Jefferson City, Mo.
–During the month of April, consumer advocates with the Attorney General’s Office secured over one million in restitution for Missouri consumers across a variety of cases and issues.
“My most important duty as Missouri’s Attorney General is protecting all six million Missourians. When consumers are defrauded or scammed, our team is on the frontlines in working with consumers and businesses to put money back into the pockets of Missourians – not in the hands of bad actors,” said Attorney General Schmitt. “I’m grateful for the work done by the talented men and women in my office.”
The Consumer Protection Section of the Missouri Attorney General’s Office works to protect consumers from fraud and scams, as well as work to retrieve assets after a fraud or scam has taken place.
While large multi-state settlements with corporations and sizable restitution amounts from unscrupulous businesses may make the news, the work that the consumer advocates do to put money back in Missourians’ pockets largely goes unnoticed.
In certain instances, consumer advocates work to mediate complaints between businesses and consumers and return assets to consumers. They also field questions, gather information, and generally work to ensure that every complaint is fielded properly and efficiently.
Any Missourian that feels subjected to a scam or a fraud, or wants to report an unscrupulous business, should contact the Missouri Attorney General’s Office’s Consumer Protection hotline at 1-800-392-8222 or online at: http://ago.mo.gov/civil-division/consumer/consumer-complaints
