Today, The Platte County Commission voted to join Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt's fight against opioid abuse. A lawsuit was filed by the Missouri Attorney General’s Office against Johnson & Johnson in 2018, and was expanded in 2019. The global settlement, which was announced in July of 2021, includes Johnson & Johnson and three major opioid distributors (AmerisourceBergen, McKesson, and Cardinal Health). The settlement could bring just over half a billion dollars to victims of opioid abuse in Missouri. Since announcing the settlement, the Attorney General’s Office has been aggressively engaging counties and subdivisions about obtaining sign-on.

In a letter to President Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Attorney General Schmitt, along with 19 other state attorneys general, voiced opposition to the administration advocating a policy that would provide the federal government with access to nearly every American’s bank account and financial transaction information.

Today, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt joined a 19-state coalition urging Congress to reject burdensome legislation that would increase fees on energy producers and hit American consumers with even greater price hikes. The two bills in question are the Methane Emissions Reduction Act in the Senate, and a provision of the Build Back Better Act in the House of Representatives.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt yesterday filed a response brief to the Department of Justice’s appeal in the Migrant Protection Protocols or “Remain in Mexico” case brought by Missouri and Texas. The brief was filed in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, and oral argument in this case is scheduled for November 2, 2021.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt today announced that his Office has obtained two consent judgments in Sunshine Law lawsuits launched earlier this year. The lawsuit against the Ray County Commission and the lawsuit against the City of Fairview were filed in April of 2021.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt today sent a letter to the Department of Justice and Attorney General Garland slamming their decision to publish a memo that directs the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice to work with federal prosecutors to investigate and potentially prosecute parents who show up to school board meetings to advocate for their children.

Today, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed a motion to renew and enforce the preliminary injunction in his lawsuit against St. Louis County following County Executive Page’s attempt to illegally impose a second mask mandate. The motion was filed in the existing case against St. Louis County, and asks the court to apply the existing preliminary injunction to the County’s new health order. The Attorney General’s Office also filed a motion to compel discovery, as St. Louis County has produced scant discovery in this case to this point.

In a press conference held earlier today in Springfield, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt gave an update on the SAFE Kit Initiative, reporting positive progress in clearing the backlog of untested sexual assault kits through the initiative. The Springfield Police Department also announced that they have completely cleared out their backlog, leaving zero untested sexual assault kits in their inventory.

Today, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt filed an amicus brief in support of Rae’s Café in their lawsuit against Jackson County. The brief, which was filed earlier today in the case Jackson County v. Rae’s Café, argues that Rae’s Café, now Rae’s Private Club, is in compliance with the mask mandate and that Jackson County has violated the owner’s due process rights.

The Missouri Attorney General’s Office today argued in front of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals en banc to defend Missouri’s law that prohibits abortions based solely on a pre-natal down syndrome diagnosis. The Office presented oral arguments to the Court earlier this morning in the case Planned Parenthood v. Eric Schmitt.

The County filed a motion to dismiss the case, a motion to dissolve the preliminary injunction, and a motion to stay discovery, all of which were denied by the Court.

Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt today announced that a new class of assistant attorney generals have been sworn in as Special Assistant United States Attorneys as part of the Attorney General’s Safer Streets Initiative. The Safer Streets Initiative was launched in 2019 as a way for the Attorney General’s Office to prosecute violent crime in federal court.
