Jefferson City, Mo. – Associate Circuit Court Judge Karl DeMarce has ordered Brian E. Craig, 35, committed to the Sex Offender Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Farmington, Missouri, after a Scotland County jury found Craig to be a sexually violent predator.
Attorney General Chris Koster sought to have Craig committed after serving 7 years in prison for molesting a 10-year-old girl in 2004. After Craig requested his trial be moved to Scotland County, the Attorney General’s Office presented evidence that Craig sexually assaulted three other children, ages 12-14, and three young women, ages 17-26, in Adair County. He also previously served a threeyear sentence in 1994 for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Iowa.
“We must keep those who demonstrate a likelihood of committing further violent sexual acts off the streets and away from those they could harm,” Koster said. “It is important for individuals who are deemed sexually violent predators to get the help they need while the community is protected.”
Those committed by the court as sexually violent predators go into the custody of the Missouri Department of Mental Health. They have the right to have their cases reviewed annually to determine if their mental abnormality has changed and they are no longer likely to commit further acts of sexual violence if released. Civil commitments are handled by the Public Safety Division in Koster’s office.
