West Plains man found guilty of assaulting his daughter

Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster said that William Brian Hawkins, 35, of West Plains, was found guilty of Assault in the First Degree by a Howell County jury March 9. Judge David Evans will sentence Hawkins on June 1. Assault in the First Degree is punishable by not less than 10 years in prison and up to 30 years or life.

The jury found that Hawkins shook his then 17-month-old daughter on March 22, 2006. The child arrived at the hospital with many bruises, significant bleeding and swelling of her brain, and retinal bleeding. The child lost the entire left hemisphere of her brain and a portion of her right hemisphere as a result of the assault.

The Attorney General’s office was appointed as special prosecutors in this case. Missouri Office of Prosecution Services Domestic Violence Resource Prosecutor Catherine Vannier and Assistant Attorney General Lauren Barrett prosecuted the case.
