Bunker man pleads guilty to murder

Jefferson City, Mo. -- Attorney General Chris Koster said today that William Benedict, of Bunker, has pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Roger McNail on May 10, 2011.

The shooting occurred at the juncture of B Highway and Highway 72 in Reynolds County. According to police reports, the victim arrived at that location, where Benedict was sitting on the hood of his truck, threatening suicide. When McNail tried to calm him down, Benedict jumped on the victim’s truck and then shot him. McNail died at the scene.

Benedict’s sentencing is set for May 21 in Iron County, where the case was moved on a change of venue. Benedict faces 25 years on each count.

The Attorney General’s Office assisted Reynolds County Prosecuting Attorney Bob Johnson on the case.
