Attorney General Koster sues Lafayette County gas station for underground storage tank violation

Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster filed suit today against Craig Peters for operating the Cross Roads Country Market gas station in Alma without insurance, in violation of Missouri’s Underground Storage Tank (UST) Law.

Missouri law requires owners and operators of USTs to maintain insurance for the cost of cleaning up any contamination from the tanks and any damage such contamination may cause the public. Koster is asking the court to shut the Cross Roads station down until Peters brings it into compliance and to fine him up to $10,000 per day for each violation of the law.

“Underground storage tanks can pose a serious health threat to Missourians,” Koster said. “We must ensure that those responsible for maintaining them have the means to clean up any contamination that may occur.”
