Jasper County woman sentenced in Medicaid fraud case

Jefferson City, Mo. - Attorney General Chris Koster said today Jasper County Judge Gayle Crane has sentenced Dana Opfer, a Jasper County audiologist, to serve five years of supervised probation and ordered her to pay more than $30,000 in restitution to the Missouri Medicaid program. Opfer delivered the restitution check to the state at the hearing. Opfer in January pled guilty to three felony counts of Medicaid fraud following an investigation by the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit of the Missouri Attorney General’s office. The case was prosecuted jointly by the Missouri Attorney General’s office and Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney Dean Dankelson.

Koster said his Medicaid Fraud Unit's review of Opfer’s subpoenaed records and Medicaid claims found evidence of billing Medicaid for services and hearing devices that were not provided.

“One of my top priorities as Attorney General is to enforce our laws against those who cheat Missouri taxpayers by committing Medicaid fraud,” Koster said. “This kind of outrageous and illegal conduct diverts medical resources that would otherwise be directed to truly needy Missourians. Those who would steal from Missouri taxpayers must understand that we will find you and prosecute to the fullest extent.”

Koster encouraged citizens to report suspected Medicaid provider fraud or abuse and neglect to his Medicaid Fraud Hotline toll free at 800-286-3932, e-mail the complaint to or complete a complaint form at the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Website at
