Attorney General Koster sues Mt. Vernon couple for Medicaid fraud

Jefferson City, Mo.— Attorney General Chris Koster today filed a civil lawsuit against a Mt. Vernon dentist and his wife alleging they made false and fraudulent claims to Missouri's Medicaid program.

Koster said that for nearly five years, Thomas H. Alms, Jr., DDS, and his wife, Laura A. Alms, filed claims and billed Missouri Medicaid for dental procedures that Alms was not authorized by the Missouri Dental Board to perform. They also billed Medicaid for services that were not provided. Koster said the lawsuit alleges that Medicaid has reimbursed Alms for services totaling more than $600,000.

“The Alms employed multiple schemes to defraud Missouri taxpayers by overbilling for Medicaid services or by billing for services never delivered at all,” Koster said. “This kind of unlawful conduct takes medical resources that would otherwise be directed to truly needy Missourians. Thanks to the outstanding work of our Medicaid Fraud Unit, we have filed this lawsuit and will ask the court to order the Alms to pay restitution, as well as civil penalties and punitive damages.”

Koster said the suit was filed in Cole County Circuit Court.

Koster said citizens should report suspected Medicaid provider fraud or abuse and neglect to his Medicaid Fraud Hotline toll free at 800-286-3932, e-mail the complaint or complete a complaint form.
