Attorney General Koster announces sentencing in Eckert case

--child-rapist gets multiple life sentences--

Jefferson City, Mo. - Attorney General Chris Koster said today that Judge Warren McElwain has sentenced Scott Eckert and denied his motion for a new trial. Eckert, 33, was found guilty by a DeKalb County jury last month of forcible rape, statutory rape of a child under 12, tampering with physical evidence, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Koster said Judge McElwain imposed two consecutive life imprisonment sentences; one 4-year sentence to run consecutive to the life sentences; another 7-year consecutive sentence; one 4-year concurrent sentence, and $3,000 in fines.

Koster said the victim was seven years old at the time of the assault. The child was treated in Chillicothe and subsequently taken by emergency transport to Children's Mercy Medical Center in Kansas City, where she underwent emergency surgery, having sustained life-threatening injuries.

"This was a particularly egregious crime," Koster said, "and even though this appropriate sentence cannot eradicate the horror that the young victim suffered or the lifetime of having to deal with the experience, I am gratified that this predator will be behind bars for the rest of his life."

Koster said Assistant Attorney General Susan Boresi assisted Livingston County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Koenig on the case.
