Attorney General Koster reaches settlement with California telemarketers

--violators to pay $35,000 to state--

Jefferson City, Mo. - Attorney General Chris Koster said today a California couple will pay the state of Missouri $35,000 for violating Missouri's no-call law by soliciting business from Missourians who had placed their names on the state's No-Call List.

Koster said Madhulika and Ratan Baid's California companies, Smart Funding Corporation and Ariant Solutions, Inc., used third-party telemarketers to make telephone solicitations to no-call subscribers in attempts to sell home mortgage and refinancing packages.

Koster said in addition to the $35,000 fine, the agreement prohibits the defendants from making any telephone solicitations in Missouri and requires that they comply with all state and federal laws regarding telemarketing and telephone solicitations or sales. Any violation of the agreement may result in civil penalties.

"The Attorney General's Office continues to take action against companies that violate our state's no-call law," Koster said. "We will continue to work vigilantly to protect Missourians who have placed their names on the no-call list."

Koster reminded Missourians they can sign up for the Do-Not-Call hotline on his website at ago.mo.gov or by calling 1-866-662-2551. He also urged consumers who receive harassing solicitation calls to file a complaint at 1-866-buzzoff (1-866-289-9633).
