St. Louis, Mo. — An Illinois company that made telemarketing phone calls to Missourians on the state No Call list while attempting to sell goods and services related to insurance products will pay $25,000 to the state, comply with state consumer protection laws and develop policies to ensure future compliance under an agreement with Attorney General Jay Nixon. The assurance of voluntary compliance between Nixon and Bankers Life and Casualty of Chicago was filed today in St. Louis City Circuit Court.
Nixon says that since at least August 2000, Missouri consumers had been receiving telemarketing calls from Bankers Life and Casualty, and the calls continued to Missourians that had their names placed on the state No Call list after the law went into effect in 2001.
According to the agreement, Bankers Life and Casualty will pay the state $25,000 and comply with all Missouri consumer protection laws in the future. To ensure compliance, Bankers Life and Casualty will also maintain its own do not call list of consumers who requested to the company not to be called, and refrain from contacting anyone on the list. The company must also establish and implement a training program educating its agents in lawful telemarketing practices and procedures.
