Nixon obtains permanent injunction against Las Vegas woman running psychic scam by mail

Bowling Green, Mo.— A Las Vegas woman who billed herself as a psychic while attempting to bilk seniors out of money is permanently barred from sending her mailings to Missouri residents under an agreement obtained by Attorney General Jay Nixon. The consent judgment and permanent injunction against Debra Grubbs, who does business as Fitzgerald Entertainment and also uses the name Linda Langtree, was approved this week by the Pike County Circuit Court.

Nixon says the case against Grubbs originated out of the Senior Sting initiative, in which hundreds of senior volunteers across the state collected all of their junk mail for one month in 2006 and then turned it over to the Attorney General’s Office to search for scams.

A volunteer from Louisiana in Pike County received a mailing from Grubbs, in which the defendant promised a “guaranteed extra income for life package” and a “confidential spiritual reading” for a payment of $21.95. The solicitation implied that a consumer who purchased the “guaranteed extra income for life package” and “confidential spiritual reading” would receive a lifetime guaranteed monthly payout of $4,000 per month forever, an immediate $300,000 life annuity, and an instant checking account with $20,000 cash in it and/or a lost insurance policy for $500,000.

Nixon’s office issued a civil investigative demand to Grubbs, who responded by agreeing to enter into the consent judgment and keep her mailings out of Missouri. Nixon said his office was unaware of any Missourians who had sent money to Grubbs in response to the mailings.

“Due to the enthusiastic participation of our dedicated senior volunteers, Senior Sting has been a success story that keeps on giving,” Nixon said. “With the help of one of those seniors, my office was able to obtain this permanent injunction to keep this person’s fraudulent mailings out of Missouri.”

To date, Nixon’s office has taken enforcement action against 275 suspected scammers as a result of the Senior Sting initiative.
