Nixon to hold summit on combating methamphetamine on Friday in Jefferson County

Jefferson City, Mo. — Attorney General Jay Nixon will join state, federal and local law enforcement officials from Jefferson, Franklin, and St. Francois counties and the St. Louis area, as well as drug court officials and treatment providers, at a methamphetamine summit on Friday, Aug. 25 in Hillsboro. The meeting will take place from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Jefferson County Administration Building located at 729 Maple Street and will address recent developments in Missouri's effort to combat meth and strategies to address the continuing problem, particularly meth being imported into Missouri.

“This meeting is quite timely because, while we have made positive strides in reducing the number of labs busted, there is still much more work to do,” Nixon said. “Law enforcement is now seeing an increase in importation of meth into our state, demonstrating that, clearly, our work is not done in eradicating this insidious drug that continues to destroy lives in Missouri.”

Nixon anticipates hearing from local law enforcement officials, drug court personnel and treatment providers about the issues they are facing in their communities.

“In the treatment area, we need to focus on what works,” Nixon added. “The treatment of meth addiction is a relatively new frontier, and I look forward to hearing from those on the cutting edge of this important issue.”

Based on the meeting in Jefferson County and others his office plans to hold around the state, the Attorney General hopes to gather ideas about initiatives the Legislature could consider during the 2007 session.
