Former Springfield insurance agent pleads guilty to six felony counts related to defrauding investors of $375,000

Springfield, Mo. — A former Springfield insurance agent today pleaded guilty to six felony counts in connection with his defrauding several investors of approximately $375,000. Roy G. Harris (DOB - 8/12/64) entered the open plea in Greene County Circuit Court to one count of securities fraud, one count of stealing and four counts of unlawful merchandising practices.

Attorney General Jay Nixon filed charges against Harris in March 2001, alleging that he misrepresented to several clients that their money was used for investments such as stocks, viaticals, annuities, IRAs and telephone equipment when the money actually was diverted for Harris' personal use. The fraud occurred over a period from April 1998 to March 2000.

Sentencing for Harris is scheduled for Sept. 27, 2002, before Circuit Judge Calvin Holden. Under the terms of the plea agreement with the state, Harris faces a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
