Jefferson City, Mo. — Attorney General Jay Nixon today reminded Missourians who want to cut back on calls from telemarketers that Feb. 1 is the next deadline to register for the state's No Call list. Every three months, Nixon updates the No Call list, which now contains more than 890,000 residential phone numbers representing more than 2 million Missourians.
"People already on the No Call list have told us their telemarketing calls have been greatly reduced since the law took effect last summer," Nixon said. "Because those consumers have been vigilant in reporting violations to us, we've collected $500,000 in fines against more than 50 businesses, and dinner time at almost 900,000 homes across Missouri is not being interrupted by telemarketing calls."
Nixon said registration for the No Call list is quick, easy, free and available 24 hours a day.
Consumers can register either online or by calling toll-free 1-866-NOCALL1 (1-866-662-2551.)
Those already on the list who have complaints about telemarketing calls can download a complaint form or call the same toll-free number to report violations to the Attorney General's Office.
Nixon also has renewed his call for state legislators to close exemptions in the law that allow certain telemarketers, including telephone and credit-card companies, to continue to legally call Missourians on the No Call list.
The Missouri General Assembly convened this month in Jefferson City for the 2002 session. State Sen. Ted House of St. Charles and state Rep. Rick Johnson of High Ridge each have introduced bills (Senate Bill 850 and House Bill 1228, respectively) that would close the loopholes.
