Jefferson City, Mo. — Attorney General Jay Nixon wants Missouri consumers to steer clear of a new telemarketing scam where con artists falsely claim that they can provide protection against the misuse of the consumer's credit card for a fee. Nixon says his office has received several complaints from Missourians who have been contacted as part of this scam.
The scam artists call consumers and claim they can offer extra security against the fraudulent misuse of the consumer's credit card. The scam artist will either identify themselves as a representative of the consumer's credit card company or of a credit card security provider. They often attempt to scare the consumer by stating that presently their account has inadequate coverage against unwanted credit card charges. The scam artist will then ask for the consumer's credit card number.
Nixon gives several suggestions that will protect Missouri consumers from being defrauded:
