Attorney General's News Release

November 22, 2000

Consumers should be extra cautious when shopping on the Internet this holiday season

Jefferson City, Mo. — Attorney General Jay Nixon warns Missouri consumers that the holiday shopping season is no time to let their guard down while purchasing gifts online. Scam artist have traditionally preyed on shoppers during the gift-giving season, and with the inception of online shopping this trend has only increased.

Last year 87 percent of Internet fraud reported involved online auctions. When purchasing from an online auction don't send cash. Credit card companies may be able to recover money if you don't receive the merchandise, or it is not what you expected.

Nixon also urges consumers to safeguard their personal information. Many online companies post privacy policies on their sites. Check the policy before giving any information.

Nixon says there are several steps consumers can take to ensure safe Internet shopping this holiday season:

  • Shop with reputable companies. Anyone can set up shop on the Internet. Ask unfamiliar companies to send a catalog or brochure.
  • Keep printed records of all transactions including the purchase order and a confirmation number.
  • Pay by credit or charge card. Paying by credit online will protect your transaction under the Fair Credit Billing Act. This law gives you the right to dispute charges under certain circumstances and temporarily withhold payment.
  • Keep your password and Social Security number private to ensure against identity theft.

Inquiries from consumers should be directed to consumer@ago.mo.gov or 1-800-392-8222 (from within Missouri) or 573-751-3321 (outside Missouri).

All media inquiries should be directed to Press Secretary John Fougere.
