Jefferson City, Mo. — A Web site that marketed international driver's licenses as a way for drivers to get around suspended or revoked licenses was shut down today, one day after Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon filed a lawsuit against its operators.
Nixon filed a lawsuit yesterday against the operators of Drivelegal.com, a California-based Web site that sold the licenses from the Bahamas for $350 and up. The Web site informed customers that the licenses could be used in any state instead of a government-issued license, regardless of the person's driving record — including drunk driving offenses.
Nixon said his office had successfully asked the Internet server on which Drivelegal.com was operating to pull the plug on the Web site. The Attorney General's lawsuit still seeks preliminary and permanent injunctions to order the defendants not to offer the services in Missouri and to place notices on the site advising consumers that the service was not legal in Missouri.
