Jefferson City, Mo. — Attorney General Jay Nixon today obtained a court order requiring the owners of three illegal waste tire dump sites in the West Bottoms area of Kansas City to remove an average of 100 tons of tires per week until the sites are cleaned up.
The consent judgment approved by the Jackson County Circuit Court also requires Thomas R. and Cathie S. Jenkins, owners of Central American Tire Salvage Co. Inc. (CATSCO), to pay a $1,000 penalty and control access to the sites until the tires are removed for permitted disposal. The illegal tire storage sites are located at 1400 Intercity Trafficway, at 8th St. and Genessee, and at 8th St. and Wyoming.
Nixon filed a lawsuit against CATSCO in March seeking removal of the tires, which Nixon said were causing public health and safety concerns because of how and where they are kept. Those concerns included potential fire hazards and problems with mosquitoes and other vermin.
CATSCO will be liable for further penalties if the company does not comply with the provisions of the consent judgment.
