Supreme Court sets June 28 execution date for man who killed Jefferson City woman and her son in 1988

Jefferson City, Mo. — The Missouri Supreme Court today set a June 28 execution date for Bert L. Hunter, sentenced to die for the December 1988 murders of a Jefferson City woman and her son in their home.

On Dec. 15, 1988, Hunter and an accomplice, Tomas Ervin, forced their way into the home of Mildred Hodges and her son, Richard Hodges, in order to rob them. Hunter and Ervin restrained the Hodgeses with duct tape, then suffocated them by placing plastic bags over their heads.

Hunter was sentenced to death in Cole County for the murders; Ervin received a death sentence in Callaway County.
