Jefferson City, Mo. — The United States Army Reserve today honored Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon for his support of the National Guard and Army Reserve during a ceremony in St. Louis. Several assistant attorneys general and other staff from Nixon's office are serving or have served in the National Guard or the Reserve of the Army and other branches of the military.
Stuart Symington Jr., chair of the Missouri Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, presented Nixon with the State Chair's Award in recognition of his support through his commitment to employee participation in the Army Reserve. The State Chair's Award is given in limited numbers to recognize those employers who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements for employer support.
"The role of a citizen army always ready at a moment's notice has been a vital part of this country since Lexington and Concord," Nixon said. "I am proud to support my staff who are in the military reserve and the National Guard, and I certainly encourage other employers to do the same."
The award presentation took place at the Sverdrup U.S. Army Reserve Center in St. Louis. Symington, a veteran of World War II, is the son of the late Stuart Symington Sr., who served as a U.S. Senator from Missouri and as the first Secretary of the Air Force in the cabinet of President Harry Truman.
