Jefferson City, Mo. — Attorney General Jay Nixon today cautioned college students to be wary of misleading sales presentations of pepper spray or mace on college campuses.
Nixon said his office had received reports of persons selling pepper spray to some Missouri college students by using high-pressure sales tactics and making outrageous claims about the effectiveness of those sprays as a defense against attackers.
"While some people may choose to carry pepper spray, students should not let salepersons take advantage of their fears by exaggerating the problem or the effectiveness of the spray," Nixon said.
Nixon said students who are concerned about their safety can contact their schools or local police to find more information on how to protect themselves.
Missourians who have complaints or inquiries about pepper spray sales can contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-392-8222.
Inquiries from consumers should be directed to consumer@ago.mo.gov or 1-800-392-8222 (from within Missouri) or 573-751-3321 (outside Missouri).
All media inquiries should be directed to Press Secretary John Fougere.
