Kansas City, Mo. — A Jackson County roofer was sentenced today to pay $23,623 in restitution and placed on five years probation after he had earlier pleaded guilty to two criminal counts of unlawful merchandising practices brought by Attorney General Jay Nixon.
John Howard Ray, who did business under the name Noah's Ark Roofing/Repair, contracted with several Kansas City area residents and churches in 1996 to provide roofing work. He took down payments of up to $6,940 for services and supplies, but failed to perform any work.
Ray, who pleaded guilty in July to the charges, also is prohibited from working as a contractor during his probation.
"This latest sentence is just one of many we have obtained against contractors that have ripped-off Missouri property owners," Nixon said. "We will continue to make these con artists pay for their crimes."
Nixon said there are several precautions consumers can take to avoid home repair fraud:
Inquiries from consumers should be directed to consumer@ago.mo.gov or 1-800-392-8222 (from within Missouri) or 573-751-3321 (outside Missouri).
All media inquiries should be directed to Press Secretary John Fougere.
