Unsolicited fax (or junk fax)

Anyone who owns or just uses a fax machine can tell you the travails of dealing with unsolicited faxes. The pitches are for “hot stock tips,” vacation offers, health insurance ads, roofing pitches and others.

Sending unsolicited faxes is illegal under state and federal law. This practice passes the advertising cost on to the fax recipient in the form of paper, toner, ink and wear and tear on the fax machine.

The law allows an exemption for existing business relationships (EBR). For example, a company may send unsolicited faxes advertising products to its current customers.
