Consumers deep in debt or having trouble paying bills need to be careful when finding help for credit or debt counseling. Many so-called non-profit organizations have been shut down by law enforcement for funneling money to their for-profit arms. This money comes from hard-up consumers who can scarcely afford to lose it.
Many credit counselors will provide services at no charge to the consumer. To find a reputable organization in your area, contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at www.nfcc.org or 800-388-2227.
And beware of credit-repair companies.
