Welcome Home

Adopting a child in Missouri is a legal process that should be done only with the assistance of a qualified adoption professional, such as a lawyer or adoption agency.

The Attorney General's publication Welcome Home walks consumers through the complicated process of adoption, whether it's international, domestic, foster care or other type.

Consumers may encounter adoption scams and need to be careful to avoid them. Warning signs include promises of shortcuts from an adoption professional, requests that money be sent directly to birthparents or any situation that sounds too easy and too good to be true. Page 15 of Welcome Home has more on adoption scams.

Adoption agencies are licensed by the Missouri Department of Social Services. You can check an agency's license status by calling the Department's Children's Division at 573-751-4954.
