Rural resident paying city cell phone tax
Missouri consumer writes:
My cell phone bill has a city license tax, but I live in North County St. Louis, not in a city. I have not gotten anywhere by calling the wiresless company or city hall. Why am I being charged this?
We get lots of these complaints and are usually successful resolving them for consumers, so feel free to file a complaint.
In these cases, we ask consumers to get written proof from the county Assessor's office that their address is outside the city limits. Once we submit that document to the wireless company, they usually agree to the consumer's request.

I live in Wisconsin. I call my Aunt in Benton county, MO. on my cell and am charged a Missouri state tax, a Missouri county tax, and a Missouri city tax. I don't know why I am taxed without being represented in the state. Have I agreed to something I don't know about? Isn't this illegal?

I live in Independence, MO and pay a 21.76% tax on my cell phone bill. Is that legal? My cost of my monthly plan is only $84.98 and on top of that I am charged $18.49 in taxes. The real kicker is the city license tax which is $8.85 of that. The state sales tax is $4.20, County sales tax is $1.12, Local sales tax is $2.35 and a Federal Universal Service Fund of $1.97. How can I be taxed that much? I have called my city councel and they say that the issue is something I need to resolve with T-Mobile and T-Mobile tells me it is a city issue that I need to resolve with the City of Independence. Every month when I pay my bills that tax makes me so upset and would really like to know if I am being taken advantage of in any way. There are others I know that have T-Mobile that live in Independence and do not have that city licence tax on their bills. My area code is 64057. Thank you.
