No Lemon Law for used cars
This is a frequent misunderstanding among consumers in Missouri. The Lemon Law does not cover used cars - it only applies to new cars under warranty.
There's a nice article in USA Today this morning about how to take advantage of state Lemon Laws, but it makes the frequent omission about used cars - the part that most consumers are confused about. Most used cars are sold without a warranty, or "As is." That's why it's critical to research any used car you're considering - do a title search and have it inspected.
A blog post from last week offers more on used car research.

I got a grant from the welfair office to help me buy a car to get back and forth to work. it is a 1996 olds delta 88 royal with a 1 yr warrent or 1000.00 mile warrenty. after the second day i had the car i took it back to the dealer because the trany was skipping and the temp gage was going to high. they checked it out and said it was ok it's just an old car sometimes that happens. they change the spark plugs and the thermostate. i got the car back and it was still skipping but now it was getting wors.just this past winter my car brakes down with no warning. i called the dealer because i still had warrent. they towed it kept it for 4 days and on the 5th day they call me and say they don't know whats wrong but when they got in that morning the car started so they told me to pick the car up. mean while they called me every week to make sure my payments were going to be on time.since the my car has given me lots of trouble and my warrenty ran out and they never fixed anything including the thermostate they said they replaced. i stopped payment on the car. my girl friend had the same problem with her car and she got hers at the same place with the same welfair check. they gave her another car because of mcanical problems. but there trying to repo mine and leave me stuck with it.i took the car to a mcanic i trusted and in one day he told me all the problems that the car has including electrical problems fuel pump, fuel line busted, no water geting to the engine. basicaly its a bad car that is rusted out. when they tried to take the fuel line of it crumbled like sand. all in all the guy at faulkner where i got the car from said they new the cars were having problems and they were no good. but they wont make the problem wright

My husband & I purchased a 2000 Chevy Suburban from Springfield Auto Exchange,2318 S. Campbell Ave., on Jan. 7, 2008. By Monday February 4, 2008, the vehicle had quit running. When we contacted the dealership, Susan, one of the owners basically told us that once we drive the car off the lot, it is our problem. Oddly enough though: before we financed & purchased this vehicle for $19,000.00, this dealership assured us that this was an exceptional vehicle, and was is tip top shape. Well, their tip top shape Suburban is now going on its second week of sitting idle in our driveway, totally usless to anyone. Oh, except for the fact the we have had to start making the new payments on it. Aren't we lucky we chose to do business with Springfield Auto Exchange?
Any advice?

I bought a car from a dealership 29 days ago and the car had a warranty on it for 3000miles and 3months! Since upon having the car it has many problems! A few times of having the car the check engine lite came on! I took it to a mechanic and he said he dont see nuthin wrong wit it and that alot of times the lite comes on! So, a few days later the car wont turn on... I left the car at home and continued to work! Came back from home and the car started! After a few days I took the car back to the shop and the lite wasnt on but wanted them to check it out! A guy said that the car doesnt have a problem and that I bring the car back when the lite comes on! I brought the car back when the lite was on and was told they will keep it over nite to see what the problem is... I was called and said it was the vale and that I would have to pay 300.00 to get it fix! When I bought the car I tried to get a extended warranty and they wouldnt give me one said it was too late and the company who finaced me wouldnt do it! I had to put 2500.00 down due to my credit and sold a car that already has problems wit the car! Ask for my money back and was told in Missouri its a law saying that you cant get ur money back! I havent had the car for more than 30 days and already have problems! They offered to fix it with a payment of 100.00 on top of I have to pay car payment, tags, insurance, and other bills! Now they knew my credit was bad and I couldnt offered a bad running car wit problems! Now Im stuck in a used car with problem and barely had the car for 30days! What should I do in a situation like this????

I bought a 2005 Impala 29 days ago in Missouri. The first week I had it the check engine light came on so I filled out a form online to set up a service appointment and was never contacted. The next week I went out in the morning to start my car and it wouldn't start. The lights and radio came on but it wouldn't turn over at all. I called the dealership and they told me to put a battery in it and why would they tow it if it's just a battery. So when I got off work I tried again and it started but I took it in to have them look at it later that week. They turned the check engine light off and said that nothing was wrong with it. They said they did not have a loaner car and that I would have to leave it over night so they can look at it but nothing is wrong. They advised me to bring it back if the light comes on again. During the meantime of all of this the car has not started several times but eventually it always starts. So the check engine light comes back on 3 to 4 days later and I took it back to them. They gave me a loaner car this time and called me the next morning informing me that I would have to pay almost $300 to get a valve fixed which is why the light is on. They have no idea as to why it's not starting because they "can't get it to act up". I do not feel that it is my responsability to to pay for this for one and for 2 how can they not find out why it's not starting. I have escalated this to the manager of the dealership and the best they say they can do is make me pay the 100 dollar deductable. I don't feel that I should pay anything because it's been like this since week one. I would like to know is there anyway to get out of the deal? I would like to just turn the car back in and get my down payment back. What are the laws about this in Missouri. My 30 days is up tomorrow.

To Sean:
There is probably not a way to get out of the deal unless the dealership agrees to let you out. In Missouri, sales are generally final.
However, you can file a consumer complaint with our office. See above response to Sandra for the link.

Recently i bought an 05 black New Beetle at a certified used car place and even bought the extended warranty. After having the car a TOTAL of 7 months, i keep having numerous problems every month. I took it to the dealer and they wouldn't fix it. Today i went back again and told them that i wanted them to do something about it but they told me it wasn't their problem. I even have it under manufactured warranty also. What can I do...help please!
